The S- BOAT War Badge, Second Type, By Schwerin.
The S-Boat War Badge was established on May 30,1941,a year in which the S-Boat offensive was becoming increasingly important. Before this point, S-Boat crews received the same decoration as Destroyer crews. The badge was conferred upon crews who participated in 12 operational missions. There are two main versions of this medal. The Second type was introduced on January 28,1943 after complaints of S-boat crews members about the First type Badge. It is very important to understand, that the designation "E-Boat",when applied to these badges,is a misnomer. The term "E-Boat"was a British term and stood for "Enemy Boat". The true German designation is "S-Boat"(Schnellboot or fast Boat). Apparently, the First Type Badge featured an unsatisfactory boat design not in keeping keeping with the actual S-Boat look. The second type Badge features a larger, more modern S-Boat cutting through the waves. The bow of the boat and the parting waves extend past the wreath. The wreath is flatter than First and is composed of smaller oak leaves. The national emblem at the top of the wreath is larger, the eagle has longer wings, and swastika clasped in its talons is larger and hang lower.Second type badges are all made of zinc. Badge is in near excellent condition, measuring 54.03mm(w) x 60.64mm(h),weighing 32.7 grams.
